Apple’s iWatch will not revolutionize the international watch market
Watch experts from Chrono24 do not expect major influence of Smartwatch models
Karlsruhe, August 15, 2013 – Apple and Microsoft are only two of many companies that have been working on a Smartwatch to change the market for watches. Extraordinary construction materials, the possibility to make phone calls conveniently around the wrist: Do traditional manufacturers like Rolex, Omega or Tissot have to fear intrusions? According to the worldwide leading marketplace for watches Chrono24 (www.chrono24.com), the marketplace will not see any major changes in the near future: “>From an international perspective, traditional watches and their manufacturers will not lose market shares, but the brands for quartz- and fashion watches will be in direct competition”, says Tim Stracke, co-CEO of Chrono24.
The traditional mechanic wristwatch possesses high expansion rates in Asia, Russia and South-America. But these rates will not change in the next months, even if the Smartwatch was available – it will not alter a long-term maintenance of value. “A Smartwatch will be electrical waste within years against what high-class watches live through decades without problems and above all, without a massive loss of value”, says Tim Stracke. Currently, 150.000 luxury watches from approximately 70 countries are available at Chrono24 – valuable and stable.
Against expectations the smart watches will be little more than a fancy accessory. In the range of watches only one model generated a steady fashion: the Swatch. Certainly the entry level prices are distinctly lower than in expectation of the Smartwatch. Nevertheless, Stracke predicts success for the Smartwatch-Models, no matter from which manufacturer. “As a gadget, the watches with a display will find their customers. However, it’s supposed that these models will be worn on the other wrist – as a joke”.
