UNESCO: Environmental Protection and Savings Potential in In-Flight Beverage Catering enormous

  • Skytender Solutions and the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change (ESCI-UPF) present Report
  • INVITATION: Press Roundtable – Wednesday, June 15, 3:00 pm – Skytender Booth 1H25

Pfäffikon/Switzerland, June 14, 2022  With a comprehensive research report, the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change (ESCI-UPF) holds out the prospect of a comprehensive improvement in the environmental balance for future users of modern in-flight beverage catering, developed by Skytender Solutions. Three different trolley systems offer soft drinks, water and coffee specialties: Instead of various bottles, Tetrapaks and beverage cans, rolling beverage dispensers are used, which can be simply operated by the flight attendants. The environmental and economic effects have an impact on the entire supply chain of today’s systems and ensure much more efficient processes, right up to the digital evaluation of actual beverage requirements per flight. The UNESCO report makes a clear recommendation: „The main conclusion of this report … is that a change of the current system … to the solution offered by SkyTender is recommended in all cases studied.“

Press Roundtable with UNESCO
During the World Travel Catering & Onboard Services EXPO, the results will be presented in detail by Dr. Alba Bala, Project Manager & Head of Research Line of the UNESCO Chair in Lifecycle and Climate Change.
„The report clearly shows that this is the most incisive change in the history of beverage catering onboard an aircraft. The previous procurement, supply chains and on-board serving are no longer up to par with what modern systems can deliver. Besides, our trolley systems integrate seamlessly into the aircraft’s existing galleys – so technically, the setup costs are manageable,“ says Dr. Thomas Mützel-von Schwartz, technical director of the Skytender solution. The patented system for coffee has already been approved by all aviation authorities worldwide and is ready-to-fly; the version for cold drinks will be available for testing in the second half of the year.

Better supply, less environmental impact
Skytender’s system banishes disposable beverage packaging on board an aircraft. As a convenient rolling bar, the trolleys take care of all beverages on board, with the exception of alcoholic drinks. Another of the company’s offerings, the SkyBarista Trolley, allows airlines to expand their coffee offerings because, unlike traditional hot beverage catering, SkyBarista can also deliver specialty coffees such as latte macchiato or hot chocolate at the touch of a button. Thus, with SkyBarista, the hot beverage trolley, passengers get more choice with an in-seat coffee shop experience.

In addition to the hot beverage solution, the SkyBar SPLASH cold beverage platform, in particular, massively reduces the amount of waste generated as well as the weight that has to be taken on board. Skytender calculates up to three tons of CO2 saved per flight, the exact amount varying depending on flight conditions. With this reduction, fewer CO2 certificates need to be purchased, which brings further economic benefits, especially to European airlines.

Skytender (https://skytendersolutions.com) is the world’s first solution that enables airlines to completely transform beverage catering and benefit from immense cost savings as well as a significantly improved environmental footprint. With beverage vending machines built as trolleys and fully approved by the various aviation authorities, plastic bottles, coffee pots and soft drink cans are completely eliminated from catering and cabin logistics. The range of beverages can also be expanded to include coffee and other beverage specialties with high demand. Integrated evaluations of actual beverage consumption help with the calculation  of costs and future flight planning.
